With more than, 50 people losing their lives, 50,000 more being forced to evacuate their homes and 10,000 structures already destroyed , the current California wildfires are among the worst the state has ever experienced.
Former Chicago White Sox all-star pitcher and current radio announcer for the franchise, Ed Farmer is lucky to be alive and lucky to still have his Southern California home after needing to evacuate as the fire engulfed his neighborhood. Farmer joined the midday show on WGN 720, Bill Leff and Wendy Snyder, to detail his close encounter with the wildfire.
“When I look back on it, with the flames right over our head…we’re lucky we got out, very fortunate to get out,” said Farmer.
While Farmer is lucky to still have his house, for more than 24 hours he and his family were unsure what they were going to do next, knowing there was a strong possibility their California home was destroyed. When he left his home in a hurry, all he grabbed was one shirt and a pair of pants.
“I had a box there with my World Series ring and my All Star ring from 1980, and I go do I need this? I don’t wear it ever… I’ll leave it here,” Farmer told ABC News.
Farmer raced down the Freeway with fire on both sides of the road, needing to eventually spend the night in his car due to the inability to find an area hotel with vacancy.
After returning home the White Sox radio announcer says he can look outside and see for miles because of the devastation left behind from the fire. “Where everything before was green there’s no greenery hear, none whatsoever, not within 15 miles of our house, it’s all gone.”
Farmer and his family are grateful to still have their home, thankful to the police and fire department, and wishful for the thousands of others that have not been so lucky.
2019 will be Farmers 28th season on the White Sox Radio Network and 14th as their play-by-play voice. Farmer compiled an 11-year MLB career as a relief pitcher beginning in 1971, making the 1980 American League All-Star Team.
