When Mike Francesa retired from WFAN last December, he cited not wanting to work every day anymore. Now, not only is Francesa on WFAN Monday – Friday, but he also provides an occasional weeknight show on his $8.99 per month app.
Monday night, Francesa tried something new by firing up the app to broadcast himself watching the Chiefs and Rams Monday Night Football game. This is a broadcast Mike probably would have given the hand wave to if he was asked about doing it a year ago, but at least give him credit for attempting to be creative and offer unique and exclusive content on the Mike’s On app.
It’s a concept other platforms, such as Barstool or ESPN have offered with their watch shows, but Francesa’s was different because he was alone. Barstool provided a watch show during Monday Night Football with four very different personalities, keeping the broadcast entertaining.
Mike occasionally took a call, some of which were prank calls, but there were plenty of times where there was silence. The average three-hour NFL game only has 11 minutes of action, and there were times Mike was waiting for a football play to react or comment on.
If Mike does a watch show again, which he likely will for a playoff game or two, he needs a second voice to convince me to tune in again. The second voice could be a friend, a guest, or preferably the Mike’s On app and WFAN employed host John Jastremski.
