Aaron Goldhammer quoted ESPN Cleveland Really Big Show contributor Tony Grossi on Twitter, writing that Grossi said Kyler Murray is “more like Johnny than Baker.” A reference to Browns infamous quarterback Johnny Manziel.
The statement was not exactly a ringing endorsement of Murray and Baker Mayfield didn’t appreciate Grossi’s slight of his Oklahoma Sooner successor at quarterback.
“He also said he would retire if the Browns drafted me. So does anything he say have truth to it? Couldn’t be more any more wrong. There is no comparison to even be made about Kyler. He’s a winner and if you don’t see that, something is wrong with you,” Mayfield replied on Twitter, tagging both Grossi and Goldhammer.
The original Tweet with Grossi’s quote took place on January 15th, Mayfield’s reply was on the 21st, so he had to backtrack to reopen the debate, but that didn’t stop the Cleveland Browns reporter from commenting. “This is so funny. 1. Never said retire. Said ‘I’m done.’ Purposely vague. 2. Said the other guy physically was closer to Johnny (ht & wt) than you. All good. Use it how you want. Happy New Year,” wrote Grossi.
This is not the first time Mayfield reacted to a sports radio personality on Twitter, two weeks ago the quarterback responded to Fox Sports’ Jason Smith saying Baker made the Browns head coaching vacancy less desirable. In his dispute with Grossi, Mayfield also dug back to a year ago when the ESPN Cleveland host and reporter said he would be “done” if the Browns drafted him. Radio hosts talking about the Browns should take notice, because Baker clearly pays attention.
The Really Big Show on ESPN Cleveland 850 WKNR with Tony Rizzo, Aaron Goldhammer and Eric Williams airs weekdays from 9am – 1pm ET.
