Gregg Giannotti already co-hosts a drive time radio show with Boomer Esiason in the country’s biggest media market, but hearing his voice on The Howard Stern Show this week still came as a surprise. During his Wednesday show on SiriusXM, Stern weighed in on the relationship between WFAN’s morning and afternoon hosts.
Almost exactly three months after the feud, The Stern Show played and reacted to audio from Giannotti exchanging jabs with iconic afternoon host, Mike Francesa. During their “Cleaning out the Computer Segment,” the Stern Show plays audio they previously didn’t get to. Stern producer Gary Dell’Abate (Baba Booey) chose to play a three-month old Mike Francesa rant about WFAN’s Boomer and Gio.
“Giannotti, he is short on ability, I’m sorry, I’m sick of the impressions, I listened to them this morning they stink,” said Mike in the November clip.
“What he is, is an insecure bully who thinks those things are going to affect me and it just doesn’t,” Gio responded, before breaking into one of his famed Francesa impressions and getting a laugh from The Stern Show.
“That is a real war,” said Stern, acknowledging the back and forth between Gio and Francesa that led to both hosts being pictured on the back page of The New York Post was more than playful banter. “In my career I’ve had people on the station I hate and go to war with, but it is funny to hear on the radio that the afternoon guy and the morning guys are fighting,” The King Of All Media continued.
“They really genuinely dislike each other,” added Dell’Abate referring to Francesa and the WFAN morning show.
Stern acknowledged he doesn’t listen to sports radio and thinks the concept of repeatedly debating what team or players are best is “weird.” What came next is what Giannotti labeled as a “cool moment,” when Stern complimented the multi-voice WFAN morning host. “But the guy who does the impressions is funny, I like him,” said Stern.
If you’re going to get into a radio war, receiving support from Howard Stern certainly won’t hurt your cause, nor will it convince Gio to slow down on the impressions. A “cool moment” for Giannotti, who grew up listening to The King Of All Media.
