Last week, former Oriole Manny Machado returned to Baltimore for the first time and was received warmly by almost the entire ballpark. Orioles fans haven’t had much to applaud the last few seasons, so they cheered their former star who reminds them of a brighter time.
There was, however, one person who booed loudly when Machado stepped into the batter’s box and although he was mostly on an island in that decision, 105.7 The Fan morning co-host, Jerry Coleman tried to rally other Oriole fans to join him.
“He plays for the opponent, he doesn’t care about you!” Coleman told fans in the upper deck of Camden Yards before doing his best Jamaal Magloire impression, turning a packet of papers into a makeshift megaphone to project his booing toward the field.
Even with his megaphone, it’s highly unlikely Machado heard the boos from Coleman, but they garnered the attention of Manny’s former teammate and current Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder, Adam Jones.
Jones’s tweet led Coleman to explain the art of a radio bit.
The bit accomplished what Coleman sought to do, the radio host generated a reaction, not only from Adam Jones, but many Orioles fans on Twitter who strongly didn’t agree with the in good fun stunt. One person who Orioles fans haven’t had an issue booing this year is Chris Davis, but the team’s highest paid player didn’t get into the game.
The Big Bad Morning Show with Jerry Coleman, Ed Norris and Rob Long airs on Baltimore’s 105.7 The Fan weekdays from 6 – 10am.
