ESPN and FOX have both claimed victory for their Saturday college football pregame broadcasts from last weekend and The Dan Le Batard Show decided to nudge the network rivalry.
The backstory for Le Batard’s bit is centered around FOX’s newly launched Big Noon Kickoff. This season, FOX began presenting a marquee Big Ten game in the noon ET timeslot each week, launching Big Noon Kickoff as their pregame lead-in. The goal for FOX was to create a pregame show that could challenge ESPN’s College Gameday.
It’s not the first time FOX launched a show or platform to compete with ESPN. Playing off this notion, ESPN’s Dan Le Batard Show decided to create a fake promo for a FOX Sports University network, which they dubbed “FU.”
The parody poked some fun at FOX for their desire to compete with ESPN. “Have you ever wondered what ESPNU might be like, only with former employees? FOXU!” the Le Batard bit asked.
Obviously, FOX is not creating the paradoxically named channel “FU,” but ESPN’s Le Batard Show offered a comedic promo idea regardless.
Although they’re not launching the FOX Sports University network, FOX has proved an ability to compete with ESPN’s iconic College Gameday program. Last Saturday, FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff claimed more viewers than College Gameday. The caveat is the way both networks measure their audience.
On Saturday, Big Noon Kickoff ran until 12:06pm ET, adding 400,000 viewers during those six minutes, whereas ESPN’s College Gamedaysigned off at noon. Big Noon Kickoff reported 2.788 million viewers compared to ESPN’s 2.78 million. But ESPN simulcasts College Gamedayon ESPNU, with those viewers included, College Gameday’s audience reached 2.89 million.
Any way you spin the numbers, in just one season FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff has shown itself to be a viable pregame show competitor to ESPN’s College Gameday.
