Kirk Herbstreit was a guest on The Paul Finebaum Show earlier this week and he discussed his emotional reaction to a discussion of racial inequality during last weekend’s College GameDay.
ESPN aired a discussion of the social justice demonstrations organized by players across the college football landscape. The conversation was lead by Maria Taylor and featured six players from across all five power conferences. It was after the segment aired when the GameDay panelists were discussing their experiences and what they had heard when Herbstreit broke down. He told Finebaum that it was a genuine reaction in real time.
“I didn’t even really know what I was going to say. Whenever we get into subjects like that, that are incredibly sensitive and we have a feature, I always like to listen to the feature live and just react to what I heard,” Herbstreit said. “I listened Maria (Taylor), listened to the players, listened to (Desmond Howard), David (Pollack) and then Coach (Lee Corso). I had in my mind kind of where I wanted to go, but I didn’t know if I would really go all in with what I wanted to say.”
Herbstreit said he didn’t have a political agenda. He didn’t have any agenda at all really. All he knew was that he wanted to read the quote from Benjamin Franklin that Stanford coach David Shaw had given him. After that, he says he was overcome by the thought of people in pain that he couldn’t help.
“I’m not into politics. I’m into, I’m a Christian, I’m into humanity, I’m into treating people fairly and that’s my only agenda that I really had and other than that, I love the game,” Herbstreit said. “I love the locker room, I love what the locker room represents, and I tried to convey that within my message.”
Fan reaction has been overwhelming and mostly positive according to Herbstreit. He says he is happy that he was able to start a conversation.
“I’ve never said anything or done anything or been a part of anything that had that kind of reaction as far as people reaching out to me. Again, I didn’t do it for that reason, but I really appreciate the people who have offered their support of my comments and appreciate that I said what I said.”
