Al Michaels in (Amazon) primetime?
We know the legendary voice is on the call for this fall’s “Sunday Night Football” festivities, but he could be making a move to Amazon’s “Thursday Night Football” property after this season.
Andrew Marchand reported the legendary broadcaster is Amazon’s top choice to lead their exclusive coverage of Thursday NFL action. CBS’s Ian Eagle and Fox’s Joe Buck have also emerged as top targets if the streaming giant can’t land Michaels.
The 76-year-old broadcaster is calling the Super Bowl for NBC this year, but his contract is up following that event. This has Amazon and NBC discussing how to share Michaels if he wanted to continue calling games regularly. Marchand laid out a scenario where Michaels calls Amazon Prime’s 15 regular-season games while also broadcasting one of NBC’s wild-card playoff matchups.
NBC has prepared for Michaels’ departure over the last few years. Mike Tirico is heir apparent to Michaels in the booth while the network is test-driving Drew Brees as his partner during Notre Dame games. Michaels’ current partner, Chris Collinsworth, is a “longshot” to join Amazon when they take over Thursday night broadcasts in 2022.
According to Marchand, one name that does intrigue Amazon is CBS’s Nate Burleson. The former wide receiver has shined on the CBS studio shows and on “Good Morning Football” since retiring from the NFL.
Zooming out on the entire production plan, Amazon could end up forging a joint partnership with NBC that extends beyond shared broadcasters. Marchand noted how the network just lost their NHL rights and still employs a brigade of production people that they want to keep employed. In comes Amazon, which doesn’t have a production unit ready for their 2022 NFL offerings. A slate of games which Amazon is required to produce independently.
All of this could create a perfect storm where Michaels and plenty of his NBC colleagues work under the peacock and smile logos.
