It has to be awkward to watch two of your closest friends fight and be trapped between them. Whether or not there was real vitriol between Tiki Barber and Stephen A. Smith, it had to be a strange position for Brandon Tierney. He is Barber’s partner on WFAN’s midday show and he happens to be close with Stephen A. Smith.
That is why he tried to broker peace between them. Tierney revealed on Tuesday morning that he had been texting Smith to make sure there was no bad blood between the two.
“It is not worth my emotional energy to get bent out of shape about something that I have no control over. I have much respect for Stephen A. Smith,” Barber said on the show in addressing Stephen A. Smith calling him out on Monday’s edition of First Take.
Smith, on ESPN’s airwaves, told Barber to “watch yourself” after Tiki Barber used him as an example of someone talking about the Giants without knowing anyone in the organization. The choice of words didn’t sit well with Barber.
“He is the prominent Black journalist on a major network, and threatening another Black man is not what this country should be about. Period,” Barber said.
Tierney revealed that he spent most of the day texting and talking with Smith, who he has known for a long time.
“I love the guy and we talk a lot, but at the end of the day, you are my partner and you are my guy as well, Tierney told Barber. “So my objective here is to defuse this.”
Brandon Tierney said he was confident that the issue could be resolved quickly. Feelings may have been hurt and lines may have been crossed, but he knew both Barber and Smith to be reasonable men.
“I know how you are, and despite maybe how that clip sounded at the end of the day, I know how he is. And I know the reason that he has despite being loud and bombastic.”
Stephen A. Smith texted Tierney during the segment. While Tierney said he would never read a friend’s text on the air, he did tell Tiki Barber that from StephenA. Smith’s point of view, the two were good.
