Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady really doesn’t care about what’s said or written about him in the media, but he’s taking notes.
NBC analyst Cris Collinsworth made a comment about Brady about halfway through this past week’s Sunday night game when Brady’s pass to receiver Russell Gage ended up incomplete, forcing the Bucs to punt on 4th and short in a 6-3 game.
“I got nothing,” Collinsworth said trying to think of how to analyze Brady’s pass and Gage’s attempt at a catch. “I mean, this is a layup. this is like watching LeBron James miss a layup right here…I don’t know what I’m watching.”
On Brady’s SiriusXM podcast Let’s Go! with Jim Gray on Monday, Brady was asked about media criticism, and he said it’s a two-tiered approach.
“You can let things bother you, every one of them, or you can just let it roll off your back. And that’s kind of how I’ve chosen to do it,” he said implying he lets things roll off his back. “Whatever is said or written, most people don’t have all the information, and there’s some bias with that. I do believe that it’s harder on people that have no control.”
“A lot of people, they’re just trying to fill the airwaves and fill time and fill space,” he added. “Not that they don’t have a credible opinion, it might not be credible to me, but for them it’s credible and you respect the things that are positive, you respect the things that are negative. You may not agree with them, but that’s just part of this job.”
Gray specifically mentioned the Collinsworth comments, and Brady said his opportunity at FOX might be a good chance for him to set the record straight in certain situations.
“I’m gonna get a chance to cover some games here shortly, at some point, so maybe I get a chance to fire back at everyone else,” he said. “That’s natural for a commentator to have his opinion. Whether you agree with it or not, that’s just an opinion.”
Brady said ultimately he cares the most about being respected by his teammates and coaches and tunes all the other stuff out.
“I try to control what I can control. Do I miss passes? A hundred percent absolutely,” he said. “God I wish I completed every pass. I’m sure every golfer wishes every 7-iron was into the hole. I’m sure every 3-point shooter wishes they made them all. Sometimes you make hard ones, sometimes you miss easy ones and that’s just part of it. I’m glad we came back and won the game.”
“Do I wish we scored 50 points? Yeah but we didn’t,” he added. “But we found a way to win, and I think that’s gonna build a lot of character for our team and continue to have a belief in ourselves and one another that we can come through even when the situation doesn’t quite look as good as we had hoped at the start of the day.”
